Don't know if this belongs in this forum, but since it is related to water quality, I'll post here:

I know test strips for ammonia, etc., tend to get less accurate as they get older. Is the same true of the kits that use liquid reagents? And if so, how long are they good?

General rule of thumb is about 12 months. I write the purchase date on the box to give me a rough idea of the kits age. I use liquid kits for better accuracy.

Yeah, this is something I worry about.

How long do the liquid tests last?

And why is that every single one is different from the next.

I'm using Sera test kits now, and I spewed last night when I accidentally lost half of the active ingredient for my nitrates!

into the carpet!

bugger!

I replace mine yearly. I don't trust it past that. That is what I like about the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Test Kits - I have never had to purchase a new one short of 12 months because you can get so many tests out of one bottle .
