Can you ever put in too much of the ammonia treatment?

Some people think that too much ammonia will eventually retard bacterial growth, but I don't think anyone's specifically studied it in a scientific way.

The only other thing I can think of is time problems. If you add too much per day, the cycle will take longer because the bacteria need to grow a colony large enough to exceed your ammonia additions. And of course if you have 50ppm ammonia or nitrites you're well out of the range of virtually all test kits and you'll have to massively dilute your water samples just to get an accurate reading. At that point the best thing to do is start changing water to get down to reasonable levels. You'll need to do it anyway since all that ammonia/nitrite will become nitrate and the stuff IS eventually harmful. It wouldn't hurt to slow the ammonia to a trickle either, since the ammonia-eaters grow much faster than the nitrite-eaters.
