Depends on the type of conditioner and what it's purpose is. Most generally water conditioners are pretty safe as long as you don't go overboard.

I've also answered your post in the hospital forum. We do need more information though if you could please go into more detail.

I think adding too much of a water conditioner like stress coat can actually clog gills or something...

I don't remember exactly what happens, but I know you are supposed to be careful dosing.

Like tammy said, what conditioner was it?

If it's Novaqua, when I started with fish, my friend who has been doing it for years told me that overdosing won't hurt anything except my wallet! I've always over-guessed at the dose with no ill-effects I know of.

It's Jungle brand but everything seems to be ok now. I think that's what I did.

I would also be leary of cutting back and under-dosing. Constant chlorine and chloramine posioning can lead to chronic illness. Another thing to keep in mind is to be informed about if either chlorine or chloramine is being used to treat your tap water. I don't know with all conditioners, but with the aqua-plus you need to double the dosage if chloramine is present instead of chlorine. Or if the conditioner doesn't treat for both.

The problem when treating chloramines with a product that only treats chlorine is that it breaks the connection between the chlorine and chloramines and leaves your water with a rather high levels of ammonia. Conditioners that treat for Chloramines also detoxify the ammonia and make it safe for your fish.
