just tested the water and its too acidic. I want it back at 7.1 but don't wan't to jump the ph that will be too hard on them. Is it just a matter of adding some shellgrit in a stocking or something. How do you add something that it will slowly increase or decrease the ph?

There are several powders you can buy at your local Aqu which will raise or lower the PH. Depending on your tank size will depend how much you use each time. If I had to alter it I would always pre mix it in a cup first.

Shell Grit can be used this again will depend on the tank size large tank more grit and a small tank naturally a smaller amount. This is a slow continious method compared to the adjusting powders which basically change the PH very quickly.

Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do.

What is your pH, GH, and KH?
Please post again with the info before you add anything to the water.

Also, why exactly do you want to raise your pH? Are your fish dying or stressed from the pH being too acidic? I'm not a fan of changing the pH of a tank if it is not necessary to keep the fish healthy. My South American fish are not bothered by a pH of 7.8, so I'm keeping the tank how it is.

If the kh is too low and causing the ph to crash then you can just add baking soda. That will raise the kh and if you add enough of it the ph. You'll have to measure out how much it takes and add the same amount every water change. With the baking soda you can raise the ph as slowly as you want. However unless the ph is extremely acidic or not staying stable you probably don't need to mess with it.
