So I'm doing a round of water tests cause I haven't in months and my general hardness barely tests at all. Original tests back in april and another I did in June are:
ph 8.6-8.8
kh 20
gh 18

Today's tests are:
ph 7.8
kh 15
gh 2 or less

Do I need to do anything to my gh? Most of my fish seem to prefer 5-15gh according to the profiles.

That's odd - very odd. First thing - how old is your test kit? They can and do expire.
Step two, if your test kit is known to be accurate, would be to call up the water company and ask if they've changed magnesium levels lately.

It's well water so we get whatever is going through the underground spring beneath our property. The test kit is 9? months old. Less than a year. I didn't think they expired that quickly. Also everything else is dropping some too so I assumed it was working.

Hi,
In reading your note the water results surprised you.
This indicates to me that you have not done anything
to your well (drilled deeper, or changed sites where
you draw from).

If you wind up with similiar test results from a new
test kit, then I would either take a sample in to be
tested at the nearest licensed water tester, or water
board. Second testing indicating similiar results
indicates that something has happend to the aquafer
from which you are drawing your water, and the new
water should be tested to include potability.

Some places in the states are experimenting with
pumping surface water into the aquafer during periods
of heavy rains, and then pumping it back out during
dry periods. The water is untreated, and unfiltered,
and contains farm and livestock runoff.. They figure
that "mother nature" will do the filtering for them.
The jury is still out on that one. Here, where we live,
the ranchers have sold their water rights to some towns.
One of them wanted to drill another 23 wells, and start
that procedure. 2 million dollars in court and attorney
fees later, we managed to throw them out of the county
and have them pay for our court costs.

Get your well checked professionally.

Frank

I just remembered my grandpa might have changed all our water line filters. I'll ask him and if he hasn't done anything to our filtration system I'll suggest we test the water again. Having to worry about hard water for months then suddenly the levels are barely readable is enough to surprise me
