I've just finished cleaning the Panda Fun Palace. And, to my disapointment, not to say a certain degree of astonishment, I found a dead Panda. Which had, apparently, become wedged and stuck in a place I hadn't anticipated in one of my bogwood pieces.

So, before I finished the water change and gravel vac, I had to dig out the craf knife and perform some remodelling on the bogwood arch.

Now, I've had that bogwood arch for 12 years. This is the first time I've had a fish get itself stuck in that piece of wood - which surprised me because I didn't even know it had a hole that a Cory might try and explore before now!

So, even familiar decorations need checking on a fairly regular basis.

This does, of course, lead me to wonder how many fishes meet a similar fate in the wild - find an interesting nook or cranny to explore, then get stuck in it. Of course, in the wild, there would probably be another fish to come along and make a snack of it while it was helpless, but it's something to consider.

So, I am now down to 13 Panda Corys ... unless of course there are any babies lurking in there that I missed during the water change that decide to pop up in the next few days or so. Given the rate at which my Pandas spawn, it wouldn't surprise me to find a replacement appearing sometime soon. But, this little episode I've shared with you to remind you all that [1] with life, comes death, and [2] even an old hand can be caught off guard.

Hopefully the craft knife remodelling will forestall any similar episodes.

Actually, we just have a conversation like that on plecofanatics, in which what seems to be the stupidest angelfish in the world attempted to pass through a hole maybe a third of his body in depth.

I've had a dumb catfish try to wedge itself through the same small hole on two seperate occasions. It got itself in far enough that I really had to push to get it back out. Seems like sometimes when a fish wants to go into a crevice smaller than its body, it tries extra-hard and wedges itself in.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

i had a... slight aqua tremor i guess you could say. my girlfriend and i were rearranging the room and a desk bumped the fish tank stand. which was enough to shift a rock ever so slightly. (slightly enough i didnt notice any difference) much to my demise i noticed a day or two later, one of my rummynose's was missing. i found it shortly after dead. it was pinned by the tail in between a rock and a hard place (glass)... unfortuneatly it was pin the tail on the fishy (not the donkey)

I had a couple razzies stuck in the gravel. Seems if you have very large (1 to 1.5 inch) gravel they try to swim between the rocks. First time one got stuck and I rescued him right away. Second time I actually saw the rocks shift and pinned the other one down. Yup, even the gravel can git ya.

Razzies? Never heard of those. Got a scientific name for this beast?

That sucks! This happened to me recently too accept it was a rock that a Platy thought would be fun to somehow burrow under. I really dont know how she did it but that is where I found her. I think we have a responsibility to try to arrange things to be as safe as possible, but a stupid fish is a stupid fish. I guess you can not make it completely safe unless you had nothing but plants and substrate; no DW or rocks.

I dont think that the fish should be called stupid in this situation. I think the fishes will to survive over comes them such as hiding from larger fish, or finding food, and they get themselves stuck.

I think I tend to agree with both of you Kunzman96 & Platy Plunk............. if that's possible? Did you guys read my thread awhile back on, "Fish stuck half in/half out?
In my opinion, that one takes the cake!

I have had this happen also. I lost a betta, when he wedged his head between two rocks, and a dwarf gourami got trapped under a artificial sea shell.

The amount of bettas that try to swim through the drainage holes in pot plants is just incredible!

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett
