Care: Although the Emerald Catfish is not picky, it should not be purchased as a "cleaner fish" meant solely to eat leftover food. Like other bottom feeders, this species requires its own food, of which there is a wide variety. A good staple food is bottom-feeder pellets or wafers with shrimp or fish meal as the main ingredient. Gender: Females are larger and fuller than males once they reach maturity, especially when viewed from above.

Variants: Young specimens of this species are often spotted and have sail-like dorsal fins. While these characteristics are generally lost with age, there are some populations of the species (or a very closely related species) that retains the spotted coloration into adulthood.
Comments: Brochis splendens and the similar Corydoras species are very good aquarium fish. They are small, peaceful, helpful in keeping a tank clean, and are very entertaining. These fish will shoal together in groups and frolic pretty much all of the time. If you are looking for good catfish to be housed in a community tank, look no farther than these fish.
