Care: Feed live worms and small fish. Vegetable based Flakes will be accepted by should not form the main part of this species diet. A large tank with lots of rock formations and caves is required. Fine gravle or coarse sand is recommended as the Venustus likes to burrow. Sensitive to nitrite build-up. Malawi salt and pH buffer should be added to the water.

Gender: Adult males are much brighter than females.
Breeding: Use a higher temperature of 28°C, and a pH of 8.0. Feed exclusively live worms to condition the parents. Nitrite levels must be zero at all times. The eggs are taken into the mothers mouth and guarded for up to ten days after hatching.
