I was wondering if you knew any peaceful cichlids from at least 8 cm long for a 3 foot tank that has a boiseterous freshwater shrimp in it.

Cheers, Alex.

Hi there,

I'm totally biased here: but have you considered Kribensis?

I have a "large" 2 year old male in my 3 foot planted tank (just waiting on a female I bought to grow out in a separate tank before hopefully joining him).

A pair "fits" perfectly in a tank of this size, and leaves room for some form of schooling fish and a bottom feeder or two

They are extremely hardy, not messy, and easy to obtain round these parts (and they don't hassle the plants)

So far as how they will get along with shrimp I can't say I'm afraid.

Dex

They seem to be too placid to put up with the really nasty shrimp that is in there at the moment, but I will put that idea into the melting pot!

Any other ideas?

Cheers, Alex.

Kribs can hold their own. If you don't like Kribs maybe a Firemouth.

How about sme Keyhole cichlids, they get around 4 inches max and are prety easy to breed, not too aggresive but can be if they get annoyed. They can be quite shy at first, but a good group of 4 of them and good hiding places all over the tank so they feel safe, and they will come out then more or less anytime.

Good question Mike...basically, is it really a crawdad/crayfish? If it's just a shrimp, most cichlids will remove the legs, feelers, etc. one piece at a time from any shrimp. If it's a crayfish, it'll eat most fish unless we're talking a largemouth bass or other large predatory fish.

Firemouths are very peaceful when they aren't breeding.

The shrimp's body is about 15cm long and its claws are about 18cm long, so it's pretty big. I had to move it out of another tank because it started eating the fish. So I need a large-is cichlid that isn't too nasty, but also isn't too placid.

Thanks for your ideas! They've been really good. If you've got any other ideas, please tell me!

Cheers, Alex.

i don't believe there are any true fresh shrimp that grow that big. the biggest i've heard of max out at 2 to 4 inches. it's probably a cherax spp. crayfish. severums would probably be good cause they get around 20cm and are tough enough to hold there own yet still rather peaceful compared to, say, jack dempseys and such. however they require a tank that is at least 48" inches long, unless it's a 50g tank. then it should be alright.

I've decided to go with a Pearl Cichlid, so I'll see how it goes. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Cheers, Alex.
