i say go with some severums, you can hand feed them and they always greet you at the front of the tank, and they are not all that aggressive, unless of course they can swallow the other fish.

and of course you can go with an oscar, but you would have to get great filtration and dedicate the tank to him. maybe a catfish or two with him but the oscar is definatly the friendliest fish to its owner.

No absolutely no oscars. A GT would be good. Some others would be a texas, female midas, salvini, or motaguense.

the midas are reported to be the most personable. But you have to make sure that its a female. I have 2 texas. they are all right but mostly a plain big mean CA.

of all the fish suggested so far the best choice is probably a salvini. I only recently purchased some small salvini though so I can't say how personable they are. imo, the rest of the fish that have been suggested will grow too large for a 55 gallon with the possible exception of the severum. these are just so bulky that at full size they'd be better off in a 75 gallon.

what about blue acaras. they're similar to a green terror but not nearly as aggressive. another choice would be firemouths. if you can find some juveniles that are nice looking already then as adults they should be stunning. another choice though not as commonly available is Herichthys sp. 'rio salto'. this is a close cousin to the texas cichlid but it will only grow to 7-8". Herichthys bartoni aka the tuxedo cichlid would be cool too if you can find them.

I really like my severums. They have a lot of personality

I also have a tank of angelfish (6). They are only agressive towards each other when spawning but most of the time it is just one big happy family! They are quite impressive and beg like dogs for you to feed them. Truly a favorite!
