ok, I have a small, (10 gal.) tank in my bedroom, which is just WAITING to be filling with some type of cichlid. Only problem is, it's only 10 gallons. what can I stick in this little bugger that's gonna work, without skimming fish off the top every day, or without having them feeling like they only live in a 10 gallon tank? (hehe..) Someone had said the name "multi" a shell-dweller, but I had my eye on a convict cichlid, any thoughts on that one?

thanks

Not a convict, they will definitely outgrow a ten gallon. You could try a ram cichlid, such as the bolivian ram. They are nice looking, and small.

Well, I heard they weren't the greatest of parents, and I sort of wanted to at least leave the breeding option open. Was the info a steaming pyle of....well, you get the point

rams are great parents. they tend to their kdis till they're old enough to look after themselves. I think they'd be a good choice for a 10g as long as there's nothing else there with them.

you could try neolamprologus multifasciatus, they are african shelldweller. read up on them cos they have some special requirements, but tehy sound like great fish.

Rams would do fine, they are also good parents.

Rams are actually pretty advanced to care for. A 10 gallon would be good for brevis or multis. You'd probably fit about 5, 2 males:3 females.

Doing a search on google will provide you with much information.

I agree with Inko. A 10 gallon tank is perfect for shelldweller cichlids from lake Tanganyikan like the multi and brevis. If you are interested in them, read Mez's article]http://www.fishprofiles.com/articles/freshwater/shelldwellers/[/link] about setting up a shelldweller tank. I would love to save the time and money to set up one with my empty ten gallon, and I have made a thread on doing so [link=here. Check out those links as well as the profiles for the multi and brevis on this site, and I'm sure you will be able to set up a nice cichlid tank. HTH!

EDIT: As for breeding, I'm almost sure that the multi and brevis would breed for you, so you could probably make a small profit out of the whole thing in the end. G/L

I'm keeping a ram in a 10 right now and it's doing fine, plus two in my 33. I'de say so long as you can manage a 20% weekly water change and have good filtration (I use an AQ150 on mine), with decent water parameters, you'll do great. If you're paranoid about water conditions, bolivian rams are tough fish, but not as nice looking as the blue's IMO.

Electric yellows are not suitable for a 10 gallon actually, they will need to be in a colony, of 4+ which would require a 29 gallon +

Theresa's site has a good selection, except I dont think a bristlenose is really suitable for a 10 gallon, maybe a queen arabesque.
