What are the most common shellies at fish stores? Can all types live in a 10 gallon? How many?
I've been searching around, but haven't found much useful info. Any other comments/links would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

ohhhhhhhh! SHELLIES!

*calls Molly* !!!

I'll let her lecture you, but I'll tell you that the most common are the Multi and Brevis.

ADORABLE little shishies...

This should have been posted in the Tang. Forum, but no worries. Be sure to check out the articles in there, especially "The Comprehensive Beginners guide to setting up a shelldweller tank"

That's a great article.

EDIT: Refer to this link for the article I was talking about

Little Mousling will guide you the rest of the way.

Wow, such quick replies.

und666, I do remember reading that before, but the info didn't stick. So thanks for posting that link.

Even though that article covers everything I was wondering, if anybody else has more info, please post.

You can't go wrong with shellies, they're the ideal inhabitants of - well, of any tank, but quite suited to a ten gallon. Your best bet for picking a species is to call up your local stores and ask. Warning, though - they may have shellies and not know it. Often they get in a species, usually N. multifasciatus or N. brevis, although L. ocellatus is becoming more common in stores, and they don't know it's a shellie, so ask about specific species or, better yet, go out and look.

There's a list on Cichlid-forum of the known shelldwelling species - if you print that out you can take it with you to stores and be sure you're not accidentally buying L. nkambe (a BIG piscivorous rockdweller) because the name seems familiar and shellie-like. And yes, that's a personal story - luckily I didn't have the cash with me, and went home and double-checked.

If you have any questions, ask away!

I'll definitly print out some pictures to take with when I'm ready to do the tank.

I currently have three 10 gallon tanks set up with "normal" fish. So, as soon as one(or all) of these tanks opens up, I'd like to try something a little different. That's the reason I thought about the shell dwellers.

As soon as I think of more questions, you'll hear from me again.

Thanks for the information. When I had read suggestions before for a shell dwellers tank, I had visions of apple snails and hermit crabs.
