I just got a 20 USG tank and am currently housing a single texas cihilid in it. The texas will be moving shortlyand I'd love to keep some africans, seeing as how I have a 20 pound bag of argonite laying around. Give me good ideas for a 20 gal. african cichilid tank please. 1 fish tanks are very nice!

First thoughts that come to mind are kribs or yellow labs. A shell-dweller tank would work as well but that would be a group of smaller fish rather than a one-fish tank like you mentioned. I'm not very familiar with Africans unfortunately.

I keep a pair of Brichardi cichlids in a 20g. I built a limestone cave and a put couple of plants in there. They've been in there for about a year now and seem happy as can be. Mine won't tolerate any tankmates, I tried with a yoyo loach (for snail control). It wasn't pretty. I had to rescue the loach after a few minutes in the tank. The brichardi went nuts.

I second brichardis! They will set up a colony in your tank (as I have in my 20), and it's fascinating to watch them in there...

No malawians are suitable for 20 gallon tanks, including electric yellows. I'd be looking at shell-dwellers instead! I'm not sure about brichardis, I suspect that they too might need a larger tank.

If you want tanganyikans, theres compressiceps, calvus, leleupi, brichardi, pulcher, helianthus, olivaceous, various shellies (multies, brevis, caudopunctatas sp?,etc)

Kribs would work too, as suggested.
