This will not be a long list. Aside from Rams I'd suggest:

possibly a smaller pair of Cryptoheros such as C. nanoluteus, C. altoflavus, C. sp. 'Honduran Red Point', C. myrnae, C. septemfasciatus or C. spilurum. Or a pair of smaller Thorichthys spp. like T. aureum. Otherwise you could probably go with a pair of keyholes, festivums or kribs even though kribs aren't American cichlids.

In all honesty, your tank is fairly small for anything other than those tiny, non-aggressive apistos (unless you want tanganyikan cichlids...then there are a lot of choices). And seriously, apistos act like any other cichlid...they're just smaller.

Rams, Bolivian rams (larger, more robust than blue/gold/german rams), laetacara dorsigera or curviceps (flag cichlid), nanacarra anomola (gold eye cichlid), or any apisto (cockatoo are bigger than most and make nice trios).

sorry, but a salvini will grow too large for a 20 gallon. females can reach at least 6" and males more like 8" if not larger.

I think that only Rams will be fine, maybe a pair & try to breed them.
