HELLO, LOOKING FOR SOME IDEAS. I HAVE BEEN USING A 29 GAL TO GROW OUT FISH FOR TWO 55 GAL. NOW I AM LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO PUT IN THE 29 GAL AND LEAVE. I ALREADY HAVE OSCARS, JD'S IN ONE 55 BUT I DO NEED SOME TARGET FISH. IN THE OTHER 55 I AM KEEPING 3 PICTUS CATS, 6 ANGELS AND A SCHOOL OF BLACK SKIRTS. IN MY 55 I ALSO HAVE A COUPLE OF BGK THAT WILL SOON HAVE TO BE MOVED TO A LARGER TANK. I WAS THING ABOUT USING THE 29 FOR FRY BUT I HAVEN'T HAD ANY REAL LUCK WITH BREEDING. HOW MANY CRAZY CONVICTS COULD I PUT IN THAT 29 AND HOW LONG BEFORE THEY OUT GROW IT?

no need to yell!

i would only put in two convits at the most because pretty soon you will have about 80 new fry. i did the same setup but i just had the breeding convicts in my 29usg, then i let the fry grow in a 20usg.

if u went with more then a pair then i would divide the tank so you can see whos having the stud fry and whose are lacking.

just two won't work for me i like to see a busy tank without the fry. i really like the cichlid nature though and would like to stay away from guppies and other "community" fish

The problem is full grown convicts are too aggressive to have more than 2 in a 29. Someone will always be getting picked on and stressed out and in the end dead.

You could try for some of the more peaceful cichlids. Like rams or keyholes.

Edit: Welcome to the site! Just ask us any question you may have. We are more than happy to help.

Here is what I think I'm going to try Guys. I am going to try a pair of each of these three species. they are relatively small and have peaceful nature and are all cichlids. water parameters looks to be pretty close on all of them. I need to know how big the Red Jewel is capable of getting. if more than 4 inches or so I'll have to find another red species but I really think this will work though. Let me know what you guys think.

Aulonocara stuartgranti sp. Chilumba
Common Names: Chilumba
coloration: blue
max size: 4.3 inches
Temperament: Peaceful and timid when young or alone in a community aquarium. Males may fight for dominance, but injuries seldom result.

Hemichromis lifalili
Common Names: Blood Red Jewel
coloration: bright red
max size: ????????
Temperament: Peaceful with most other cichlids, but becomes very territorial during breeding

Pelvicachromis pulcher
Common Names: Albino Kribensis Cichlid
coloration: pinkish white
max size: 4 inches
Temperament: Peaceful
