You could have tetras and corys, but not Discus.
Discus are very large fish at maturity (about 8 inches),
and really need at least a 55g tank.

Corydoras & Tetras will be fine in that tank, but i think it's too small for Discus.

I'm not a discus expert but reading your post reminded me of a question to Jack Wattley-the 'name' and expert in discus-in the Feb issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist. The write wanted to know about breeders coming up with a strain of 'compact discus'. Mr Wattley opposes this and says ...for a 20-gallon aquarium, you can easily house two adult discus.

Just thought I'd share...a 29g has the same floorspace as a 20g and is actually taller so you may want to check into this further if you're very set on discus.

Good luck.

while it CAN be done, i would not say it is advised. maybe an expert says it is ok, but, seriously, an 8" fish in 29 gallon, thats not very healthy for the fish i wouldnt think.

it would be hard to keep water quality good, and they would be cramped...a 5" fish seems cramped in my 29 gallon, hence why i traded away the angelfish i had.

it can be done, especially for breeding purpouses or while they are temporarily stocked in a LFS waiting to be sold...but come on... 8" fish...20"-30" long aquarium????

I wouldnt do it either.
Discus body size wise are substantially larger and thicker than angels when mature.
While a breeding pair of angels and perhaps discus may work in a 29g tall, I would highly advise against it.
Considering the extreme sensitivity of Discus to such things as nitrAtes, nitrItes, ammonia, and even hardness, these things are incredibly difficult to control in a small tank like a 20-30g.
I wouldnt even put a pearl gourami in a 29g, so I wouldnt put a discus either. My 2 cents.
