2 angelfish (some people agree some disagree, but I dunno)
8 Cories
6 neon or other small tetra

I think that would work

A pair of Rams or Angels, a school of 8/10 RummyNose Tetra's & 6/8 Corydoras.

If you go with Angels, go with 8 Tetra's & 6 Corydoras.

Their are some really nice smaller cichlids...rams, keyholes, even Angels would do nice. I have 2 in a 29 gal long and they are happy as can be. just do the math and make sure you don't overstock. HINT---don't put neon tetras with Angels....they may end up being expensive fish food!

I've got a fever... and the only prescription... is more cowbell!

An angelfish setup is probably the best idea, there have already been some very nice suggestions.

There aren't that many agressive cichlids that would work in a 30g for any length of time. They could try for a pair of firemouths or convicts, but being protective parents not much else would be able to go into the tank.

Another option would be African cichlids...I'm not very familiar with them but I do know research is necessary for a proper setup.
