fire mouths will prob grow to big for the 30 gallon i would say try some salvini and key holes or even a small green terror then put it into a bigger tank when i is fully growen.

well i wouldn't mix firemouths with keyholes and defintaly not a salvini and a keyhole.
I would go with a pair of blue acaras or jewel cichlids

Fire mouths should be in tanks no less than 40 gallons. And they can get very agressive so i wouldnt recomend them with rams, or blue acaras. Especially not key holes! The key whole would be a good idea. Or a single angel would work too. Along with rams which get along wiuth most anything. What else are you planning on keeping in this tank? Going to be a cichlid community? Or species tank?

You could have a pair of keyholes, a pair of rams, and a pair of angelfish. They are all very peaceful, come from the same continent, and prefer pretty much the same type of water. I think a tank with these fish would be pretty cool.

I'm really not sure how I was the tank to be stocked, this is definitely at the research and tossing around ideas point.

Like other fish I've checked into in the past the varying amount of information about firemouth is amazing, and often times confusing. The majority of things I've read and people I've talked with say firemouth are peaceful except when spawning; I've rarely heard them called agressive or even territorial.

But if 'peaceful' is true, I ended up with a firemouth who doesn't go by the books or profiles He is young and still rather small, but has quite an attitude. He's claimed the entire bottom of the tank as his territory, although he doesn't bother the cories at all. Right now he's basically an agressive chaser so I don't know if he'll calm down with age or just get worse.

I was hoping to find something that wouldn't put up with his chasing...not necessarily overly agressive and start some fish war, but maybe that could put him in his place. Could be I'm hoping for something that doesn't exist.

Thanks for the replies though, keep them coming

Personally, I think firemouths being peaceful is a relative term...sure they're peaceful, for CA cichlids. Compared to many SA or West African cichlids, they're down right aggressive. Still, I like the CA attitude!
