Wow...... 400 gallons.... thats huge!!! For a tank that big, I wouldnt know what to put in but I have a question.... how do you catch a fish in that size tank?!? I have seen a 250 gallon at a LFS and it is huge!! My biggest tank is a 55 gall. and it is a pai catching fish in there.

***end fantasizing about a 400 gallon tank!***

I have seen full grown Severums with Cardinals and they don't even barely look at the cards. Firemouths would also probably not pay attention to the Caridnals in that big of a tank. If your feeling "iffy" about it go with about 25 Congo Tetras instead. or 50 Rummynose's.

Made a few tweaks to the stock list...

2 Blood Parrots
2 Green Severums
2 Gold Severums
25 Congo Tetras
30 Cory's
4 Angelfish
10 Otto's
2 Pleco's of some sort
2 Firemouths
40 Platy's (Dither fish for some of the cichlids)

Good luck I wish I had a 400 gallon

[edit] Oh and watch the aggression between Cichlids. If they become aggressive then maybe take out the one being bullied or the one doing the bullying. Just keep a watchful eye upon them if you can

there some problems tetra fans stock list as the severums would pick on the angels. and the cories, ottos and platies would end up as food

How about eartheaters? I've 3 labiatus and pair of red heads. Very colorful and very fun to watch as they sift through the gravel. Black banded Leporinus would be nice, but they can be fin nippers. Longfin barbs (Puntius arulius) make a great shoaling fish. I've got a group in my 300 gallon. Along with the Eartheaters and leporinus, the tank has green and gold Severums a pleco and some clown loaches. Makes for a nice mix of sizes, shapes, colors and activity leves.

Large enough for the Severum and Angels to keep away from each other. Platy's are natural dither fish for firemouths and there fry make great food...not them. Ottos would probably never be seen by the larger fish in that size of a tank. Not so much weong as you think greenmonkey

platies might be natural dithers for firemouths but not severums. the severums and the angels would still meet each other in that tank

GreenFootBall....

Angelfish carry a parasite that is fatal to Discus, and plecos are known to suck on the slime coat of both Discus and Angels.

In such a massive tank, I'd say the smaller and even mid-sized cichlids you mentioned would 'look dwarved' against such a massive back-drop. As it's in a workplace... is money a massive consideration? If not, I'd say an African Rift Lake tank. That sized tank could be crammed with them and they'd thrive.

If money is an issue, I'd concentrate on replicating a biotype of your preference. I personally feel parrots are really nice but in such a display arena, I'd go for something 'natural' and there are so many cichlids that are gorgeous (even if the colour isn't as vibrant as the parrots).

Apart from the Africans, a large shoal of Discus and/or Uaru would be my choice I think, coupled with a huge shoal of neon tetras.... what an Amazon basin you'd have there....

2 blood parrots : mas size 8 - 10in
2 convicts : max size 6in
2 firemouths : max size 7 - 8in
2 oscars : max size 14 - 16in
2 JD : max size 10in

that is what i came up with although i know somebody will make alterations to help u get the right stokc list

Definetly get an arowanna, no large american cichlid tank is anything without one!

I would get...

1 arowanna
1 clown knife
2 two BP's and 1 pleco (already said)
3 oscars

Increase the blood parrots, or get some rosy queens (red devil x blood parrot hybrids, larger and darker in color *more red*)

And if you could find them..giant gouramis. Great in large tanks, you'd probably fit two.

Just trying to keep it simple.. the fact that the tank is at work would mean its hard to have alot of maintenance.

With clown loach kid's stock..your gonna get alot of aggression I think.

At a tank at work...convicts wouldnt be great, the constant breeding would be hard to maintain. Severums would be constantly battered.
