I have been really wanting to get into cichlids!!! I have a 55 gallon aquarium that is pretty much empty (can be in the blink of an eye). I was wondering; what is the hardiest and easiest cichlid for a beginner to keep? I have never kept any cichlids before (other than Angelfish). I would appreciate anyone's suggestions! Thanks!!!

Check out (angel community tank) in this forum. Lots of good suggestions. None of the fish mentioned there are partiularly difficult to keep.

Good luck, Mike

I am interested in any of them. I think I am going back the the Electric Yellows though. I think I can keep 6 or 8 in my 55 Gallon aquarium. I have an Aqua Clear 500 running on my 55 gallon. Is that enough filtration? Also, any tips you can give me about E. Yellows would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!!!!!!

I was also thinking about keeping a Jack Dempsy, Green Terror, or Green Severums. Just one question about them, how many can fit in a 55 gallon? I know 2 Jack Dempsy would probably not fit in a 55 gallon, so can you keep one alone? Or if I do get one, should I add some other fish? Thanks for everyone's help!!!

Speaking from my past setups, you get alot more enjoyment from african tanks. Its like something new is always happening. Usually they will spawn and you can make a few bucks off the fry or get some store credit too! SA/CA cichlids are usually for show, as they are large, and your friends will always say "wow" when you pop a feeder in there

I would go with a malawian or tanganyikan setup, if you want a tanganyikan setup, malaikah in the tanganyikan forums can help you plan a very nice setup.

You could fit two Jacks in the same tank, of course a male and female. I had two with probably 6 other fish (All fairly large size, but not huge!) in the tank and they lived for a very long time..And they were happy too!

you could probably keep a pair of either JD, GT or severums. YOu may be able to get away with a female GT with a severum as well. I have found them to be good tankmates, but you may run across an overly aggressive GT that will not like a severum tankmate.

You should also check into firemouths or another Thorichthys spp. or one of the less common Cryptoheros species like C. sajica, C. spilurum or C. nanoluteus. All are gorgeous fish.
