i personally would do acei and yellow labs. i have had this setup before and it works really, really well. thea acei will shoal and stay in the upper part of the tank(among other places) and the labs will be a great complimentary color to the already gorgeous acei. cant go wrong. i would only do 2 species in that tank. go for 5 of each or 7 acei and 3 labs. acei are not territorial and wont fight between each other. the labs are more territorial and with three in there, wont skirmish much at all. this will also allow them to get more room between each others territories.

also, you wont need much rock in that kind of setup either.

Would 4 Acei, 4 Yellow Labs, 4 Red Zebras and 4 Saulosi be OK? (all in a 1:3 male:female, although labs will be hard to sex)

I think that you would be ok...but you know be sure to have plenty of hiding places and caves for them to disappear into if they are feeling threatened, and be sure to keep up with the water changes...

What kind of filtration are you planning on? I know I loved my mbuna, they were simply awesome, and so much personality

You should ask heidi or hmlaird(<shows how long I've been here!) or Texas or whaever her name is today. She had a very very similar setup until her tank burst. Don't quote me, but I think she has accai, labs, and one other species. You might be able to do that, I think if depends on the actual fish.

EDIT:
she beat me too it (heidi is houston today)

yes dj it does show how long you've been here if you remember me as hmlairdfor now I'm houston

Yes, I had a similar set up until the beginning of this month when one of my bottom seals broke:#(and I lost everyone:#(and to think I actually had a couple of them holding

My stock list was:
3 Acei (Pseudotropheus Acei)
4 Kenyii (Maylandia lombardoi)
3 Rusty Cichlids (Iodotropheus sprengerae)
3 Cobalt Blues (Metriaclima callainos)
5 Electric Yellows (Labidochromis caeruleus)

I really loved how active and entertaining they were, and I really miss Bubba...the acei above...he was the dominant fish of the tank, and a truelove bug

any other questions feel free to ask, I lost mine, but want to restock at some point, when I reseal the ]:|]:|]:| tank...

heidi

ps here's a pic of the tank as it was

to be safe go with 3 species. I would choose between the saulosi and the zebras. There going to be the most agressive and then most likely to fight.

I keep yellow labs, red zebras, metraclima greshakeis, and 2 different type of peacock in my 55 uk gallon, all with no aggression and the tank is a veritable fry factory(currently 6 red zebra fry,2 yellow labs,7 greshakeis).Hiding places and swimmimg space is the key.Holey rock is the malawi keepers best friend.

i guess it really depends on how much aggression you can put up with. the more species in the tank, the age/size you put them in, the different times you add new species, all will make an impact on how smooth the tank will be. if you want a guaranteed easy running tank, my original suggestion will work. if you start putting 3, 4 or more species in there (or peacocks), that will complicate things. it may work out too. you never know. everybody has a different opinion about what you should put in there and some ways will work, others wont. no matter what you go with, there will be some adjustments needed along the way. i found that 55g tanks are on the small side and with the fish i had in there(1 lab, 7 acei, a red zebra, a demasoni) they outgrew it in about a years time. keep that in mind.

I would stick with the Labs,Acei, and Salousi(as Red Zebras can be aggressive and the F Salousi will give you the orange color anyway). Introduce them all at once as juvies, better chance the will get along.

At least get yourself some labs and aceis, I'd also add rusties or cobalt blues...the rusties actually do have tiny little needle teeth, and the cobalt blues are the palest of blues and really nice...really it is up to you and also up to what you can find in your area...the reason I'm holding back on restocking after I get the tank resealed...I have to get what I want, not what i can get...take your time in find what you want...heidi

ps here is a better pic than the last i posted...

On my 55 I have a Fluval304, an AC500 and an AC150, but I will probably remove the 150.
I just want a tank with different colours of fish. 4 yellows, 4 blues, 4 reds, etc....
So 4 Yellow Labs, 4 Cobalt Blues and all the other species have differently coloured males and females...
