I was planning on such a tank myself. I would say you could get 8-10 in there, but I would try and have 2 males and the rest females.

Erm... that would be a wee bit understocked... if indeed it's going to be a lab only tank... If I where you I would go with 3M/10F.

Third that. And as for sexing, it's virtually impossible without venting or seeing the females holding. I wouldn't be too concerned, male labs tolerate each other quite well compared to other mbuna. Just get a large group of them and figure it out when they start breeding.
