I currently have the following fish in a 23 gal tank and my 56 arrives tomorrow. I am thinking of moving them to the 56 and need to know whats the best procedure to do it.

My plan is:

1. Siphone half of the water out of the 23 gallon into the 56 gallon.

2. Siphone 20% of the water out of my 79 gallon into the 56 gallon.

3. For the rest of the water use cured tap water to fill the tank.

4. Scoop as much gravel as possible out of the 23 gallon and add to 56 gallon.

5. Add filteration to the 56 gallon and let the tank sit for a day.

6. Add two fish a day to the tank.

I also have the current stock that will go into the 56 gal and need some advice about what I should add/remove:

Breeding pair of Jewels
Breeding pair of Salvinis
2 Convicts (1 m, 1 f not breeding yet)
2 Striped raphael catfish

Thanks for any help you can provide.

um, first change the water and clean gravel from the old tank, b4 u add it to the new tank. first set-up dry.

add an UGF if u are planning too, then add some gravel taht has been semi-cleaned. then set a plate on top of that, and add teh old water in. i would use 40% of the water that the fish came out, too me takeing water out of a tank there the fish hasn't been in is a waaste of time.

use tap for the rest, followed by stress coat, and salt.

let the tank run with filters, and add some live plants and teh rest of the hiding places.

then wait around 1 week b4 adding fish.

The water really wont' do that much but if your' taking it out you might as well move it to the new tanks.

Any surface is where your bacteria is. So transfer as much gravel as you can ...without throwing the established tank into minicycle. You can squeeze the filter media over the new filter media. Any plants fake or real will also hold some of the bacteria.

If you're not adding the new fish right away keep the tank supplied with a food source by crumbling a small ammount of food into the tank daily. That'll feed the bacteria.

Okay, I will remember to do that. I am leaning towards moving all the fish in the new tank together. I do need to know though if the stocking is good, or if I should change something?

Okay, the tank's set up and currently has the following:

2 Jewels
2 Salvinis
2 Convicts
2 Raphael Catfish

Can I add anything to this combination, or is my tank full?

your tank is (or at least will be) overfilled. the salvini pair will fill up that tank just fine once they get bigger. I would move the jewels back to the 23, keep the salvini in the 56 along with the raphaels which shouldn't be bothered by the salvini and then get rid of the convicts or get them their own 29 or larger tank.
