I have a 70G tank. I went to several stores and I was told I can get between 12 cichlids to another store saying I can get up to 18-20 cichlids. Also, I was told that if I over crowd the tank a bit that cichlids won't fight as much. Is this true? I already have plenty of rocks with several hiding places.

I think it depends on the cichlids you want.

If you're going with the pugnacious Malawi species, overstocking has been a technique to curb aggression as it is diffused over a larger group of fish. So yes, I would say you could fit roughly 15 in a 70g.

However if you want a larger-growing South American species such as an Oscar, then probably only 1 will do!

when they give you that stocking level, they mean african cichlids. most likely malawi mbuna. it will vary greatly on the fish you choose to put in the tank. As Enzo said, this isn't the case for an oscar.

if it was me, i'd limit it to about 15 mbuna OR 10 smaller peacocks or haps.

Thanks, it's mostly African Cichlids... Like you said... Haps and mbuna.

I did have 2 Oscars and 2 firemouth in that same tank before. There was no problems either. I had to move so I to give them away.
