I always thought that angelfish were very pretty, and since my ram just died i am looking around at fish, maybe not to buy but i always love more info. Would a pair of angels be alright in a 20 gallon heavily planted? I have heard conflicting info, some websites saying yes, others saying no. What experience does everyone here have?

And at the same time do angels need to be kept in pairs, or can one be kept alone?

Angels need at least a 20 high but a 29 is better. They're a tall fish and a 20 long isn't tall enough.

They do fine alone and if it's only a 20 with other fish in it one would be better than two. They get pretty big and, if you ended up with a breeding pair in a 20 the other fish would suffer. Angels get cranky when they spawn.

They're cool fish though.

Have fun, Mike

I have 2 paradise fish and one ram but i am just looking for ideas for the future, i am always looking into the future of my tanks, lol. I love thinking of what to do next. But just thinking...would a single angel be alright in a 20 gallon with a few other fish?

I really wouldn't do it. I have a really big angel in my 55 gallon, and he's just WAY too big and tall to fit in a 20 gallon. His body is about... *looks at ruler* 3+ inches in diameter, and 8 inches tall from top to bottom of fins. Just WAY too big for a 20 gallon. They might be able to live there temporarily, but I don't really believe in getting fish that will outgrow your tanks. By the time they have, they'll already be stunted. I really wouldn't recommend putting an angel in a 20 gallon AT ALL.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

Angels like some swimming space, so a pair in a 29Gal. would be ideal. You can also have 1 Angel in the 20Gal. with the other fish that you have, but keep an eye on the cleaning schedule.

I do not think i am going to put an angel in my 20 gallon high, i was just researching and looking around. I always thought the koi version was very pretty, and i could never find agreeing tips on what size tank they can go in.

I think that is a very wise choice Hooktor.

My big male is a koi angel! I love that coloring. Here's a piccy of him a couple months ago. He's grown since then, I think.

He's gorgeous, but it sounds like having one angel in a 20 high is not the best idea.
