Just wondering, what species of African ciclids would do well in tank sizes that are:

20 Gallon
15 gallon
10 Gallon
5 Gallon
2.5 Gallon

Most interested in fish that would be fine in 10 gallons, if there is any.

Only thing that springs to mind are some of the smaller shelldwellers: Neolamprologus brevis, N. multifasciatus, etc. You could keep a colony in a 10 gallon or up.

Alright I got a 10 gallon tank with a standard hood and light. The Light bulb is a blue color light though, it helps bring out bluish hues in fish, but is less light though for plants, but still some light. It currently has no heaters, no filters, hardly any thing worth calling gravel. So basically a few gravel rocks.

Sooo if I decided to convert this into an African ciclid tank, what should I do for substrate? Aquarium Decorations? Plants or No NO? Also what kind of filter should I get? Is a powerhead a good idea, and/or UGF?

General,

I have read a few articles as of recently. I would suggust a pair of female shelldwellers and one male. A 10 gallon is perfect for shelldwellers seeing as they only reach about 2-3" at most. I would sugguest only one male because of territory. No underground filter because youre going to use sand and shells and plenty of em. They need as much room on the floor as they can get so I would stick to sand and shells. Check out this site for more info and any other questions you might have. shelldwellers.com also i have a topic posted here that might help you, it contains many sites and info/pictures you might find helpfull.

Thanks Peter, I went and got some ciclids. http://fishprofiles.com/forums/thread.aspx?id=36679&rp=1

These are the smallest mbuw cichlids. They are very aggressive the guy at the LFS store said, so he said I should either get 1 or a bunch. So I got 4 of them. So I'm going to wait a while, and then I will probably get 1 species of shell dwellers. I was originally thinking species tank, but I decided on two species now and no more. based upon what was available at my LFS for shell dwellers, I was thinking maybe Golden Julies. However if you could point me out to a site that sells shell dwellers, that would be great, they might have more selection.
