Yes both are relatively mild tempered, and like all rift lake cichlids the more hiding places they have the less aggressive they can be as they are not fighting over the same hidey hole.

Gibson SG you know you want one!!

What should the ratio be as far as male to female? Also are there any more african cichlids that will go with the acei and the yellow lab? I have a 40 gallon tank how many do you think I can get. Also I have a red tail shark will he be ok in the tank with these cichlids?

honestly i think in a 40g you should leave it at yellow labs and aceis. these 2 species are very compatible and work very well together.

yellow labs are very shy and aceis are schooling and tend to hang up top. aceis are very hyper also which brings the labs out of hideing in the rock work. shouldnt be any agression between the 2.

being a 40g im not sure how many total fish you could get away with. depends on dimensions of the tank. a 1m/4f ratio would prolly work good for the labs and shouldnt matter to much with the aceis.

by the way this has nothing to do with compatability but thought i would also include that the purple acei with yellow tail is artisticly perfect along side yellow labs. this doesnt sound liek a big deal but after you see them together in a tank you notice trust me

Sin is so right

I have Acei and Labs in my 55 (a couple others also) and they labs and acei get along very well, and the coloring now that it is brought up goes great together

Also as Sin mentioned they are both fairly even tempered and react really well together...want to see some action, dump in a few fresh escargot still in shellNow that should bring hysterics

Thanks for the information. I will begin looking for the Acei and the yellow lab. Question is there a problem finding female fish over male fish?

ya severe problem. you cant tell lol. the agression is low enough that i think you will be ok. its almost impossible to tell the difference between sexs unless you sit back and watch the tank and see what roll they play.

So what you are saying is that if I happen to get more than one male of each kind then I should not have a problem?

ya they arnt super agressive types of fish. if more then one male exists they will scrap for a little while to find out whos king and that will be the end of it. the submissive male will follow the rules and run when needed.

its almost impossible to tell any difference between males and females by looking. some say male yello wlabs will have more black on thier bottom fins. alot of times this is true and you can pick a male that way. you cant prevent getting a male this way because males also have less sometimes.

Also male electric yellows usually have a black line thru the eye, something that females don't have.
