I want to set up a 35 gallon aggressive tank. I had a few questions that I was hoping to get answers to. I am seriously thinking about placing Convict Cichlids to the tank, I want to know how many I can get away with placing in there and what are some good tankmates and how many of each for the 35 gallon tank? Jack Dempsey, Green Terror Firemouth, Salvini? What can I put together and how many of each kind would be okay? Also, I heard so many different view points on the minimum size tank that could be suitable for a Redbelly or two. What is the verdit? Help me please I need as much help as possible figuring this out! Im willing to listen to any suggestions, personal experiences, advice, etc.

I'll be the first to admit I'm no expert on cichlids, but i do know the basics about some of the most popular species. JDs and green terrors are way too large for a 35 gallon tank. They can grow to 10+ inches and are very aggressive. I'm not sure about convicts in a 35 gallon, but even if they're ok in a tank that small they probably can't have any tankmates since they're aggressive as it is and become even more so if they breed. Is a larger tank a possibility?

Hopefully someone with more experience will come by, but that's a just a primer for ya.

If you want to have more than a pair of convicts in the tank go with all females. This way you wont have the problem of breeding agression. Convicts are quite easy to sex. The females have orange bellies and stay quite a bit smaller than the males.

Convits are super cool fish. I just had my pair breed and the little non-free swimming fry are super cute. The only thing is with having a breeding pair is you have to find homes for them or have something that will take care of them for you. If you know what I mean.

I would say maybe 3 or 4 female cons and 6 tiger barbs.

Yea, if you have a breeding pair of convicts in a 35 they will destroy anything you put in with them, you could have two firemouths and two female cons...maybe.

If you want to do the firemouth/convict tank. Get your Firemouths fist(bigger than the cons.) and then your smaller female convicts. Also give them lots of stuff to hide in.

Haha, sorry to spoil the fun, but convicts are going to have tiger barbs for breakfast dinner and lunch. I know mine would, and a friend's 2 inch convict killed 15 tiger barbs and ate them.

ClownyGirl,

You guys must have some super mean convicts or mine must be wimps. Also what are you feeding the cons? Live food? If you are that might make them a little extra agressive.
