An angel ram... what is it, a ram, or an angel?

I've never seen, or heard of these things before, but one of my lfs has a tank full of juvies.
They look like German/Blue Rams, only with BIG bellies like a ballon molly... really... strange.
They are only about 1", I wonder how big they get full grown.

I have no idea, though it is probably just some variation of German ram. There are quite a few varieties floating around, which is most likely what you're seeing. I doubt that this fish has any relation to angelfish at all, except for the name.

they are a man made variation of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, personally I don't like em.

For comparison: here's mine, wild type M. ramirezi:

They are man made mutations. Their swim bladders and stomachs are grossly enlarged to make that shape. Opinions widely vary on the ethics of them.

I am just honestly curious about this. How did you determine they're different? I've always thought they were the same thing, but I've never been able to find a picture of an angel ram. Seen balloon and long finned variations of the german ram, but never an angel.

I wasn't able to see any good pictures of Angel Rams online, but I did find some of Ballon Rams.
They have Angel Rams in a local fish store here, the main difference I could tell, is that the overall colour to the Angel Ram was much lighter, almost like a whitish background, instead of the warm gold/tan shade of the other Rams.
