Yesterday, while buying new fish, the lfs I was at had angel/bolivian ram hybrids. Anyone ever heard of that one? They looked like rams. I didn't buy any, but now am wondering if I should have. Would have been interesting to see how they turned out.

If you are talking about angelfish/ram hybrids, then it is impossible.

i would say that hybred=no. don't forget that most lfs will change the names of the fishes, for example

high fin loach =

chinese loach
high fin dolly loach,
high fin shark
bull shark
etc.

and they all = the same fish. my guess is that it is a ballon ram.

Actually, it is possible - and it's been done. Sad but true. That said, some of the fish sold as hybrids aren't, which isn't to say I'd recommend buying them.

Has been done? You mean angels breeding with rams? No, actually it is quite impossible. The two go down extrememly different paths on the SA cichlid family tree.

They do indeed but we all know that the once-sure definitions of species aren't as accurate anymore. It's certainly astonishing (and quite unfortunate) but it's happened. I've seen them; a few members here own them. I believe the archives have some information about them, if the search feature's working, and there's probably a few threads at Cichlid-forum as well.

You should check again. If by angel rams you mean the long finned strain or the long finned balloon ram, then yes, there are such fish, but they are not hybrids, merely the culmination of much selective mutation, if you will. Ram angelfish hybrids do not exist, and unless you can find any real evidence (because I sure can't), my verdict stands.

The guy at that lfs said that's what he had, angel/ram hybrids. I don't know if he bred them or if he got them from somewhere else. I was just curious if it was possible. Like I said, they looked like rams to me.

Ram mutation, NOT A ANGELFISH AND RAM CROSS!!!! I'll pay anyone $100 if they can prove it's a hybrid between the two species. It would have to be a genetic experiment done in a test tube, and the chance of survival is incredibly poor. Look into balloon rams, and if the lfs insists it's a cross, don't shop there! They're only trying to turn a buck .
