Anyone had angel fish lay eggs on a filter pipe... this morning when I woke up I find a cluster of what appears to be eggs on the filter pipe.... has anyone either heard or seen this? It is a community tank but the pair off angels that i bought are protecting the filter pipe... however i dont know if I have a male and a female or two males... I bought them at a fish store they were labeled assorted angels (large) but I have had them for over a year I believe... any suggestions

If they are protecting the eggs you've probably got a pair. I have heard of two females laying eggs, you'll have to watch and see if yours hatch out. They should be wigglers in a day or two and free swimming five days later.

You'll want to have newly hatched or frozen baby brine shrimp on hand to feed them once they swim.

If they are in a community tank, they may get picked off one by one or the parents may beat the snot out of eveyone else, or both.

Keep an eye on things and maybe get a tank just for the Angels for next time.

Good luck, Mike

Mine also used to lay eggs on the filter intake & usually you lose nearly all the fry, as the filter will suck them when they start to swim. If you want to save them, just switch the filter off, if possible.

It's impossible to have 2 males & have eggs. Maybe you have 2 females, but if you keep an eye on the eggs & you will see them hatch or see them breeding next time (in 2 weeks time), you will know if you have a pair.

Angels can lay eggs when they are 9 months old & yes, they'll protect the eggs & fry. What other fish do you have in the tank?. If you are interested in breeding them, you can place them in a tank on their own & if you're lucke, they'll breed every 2 weeks.

Angels usually lay there eggs on a verticle surface. In the wild angels live amongst tall slender weeds and just mistook the filter pipe for a weed. It should be fine, but like mentioned above, just switch the filter off when the eggs start to hatch, or you could put stockings over the filter intake if possible, to reduce the suction and to keep the fry from being sucked up into the filter.

Good luck

They will hatch in 3 days & then they stay for 7 days without swimming. When you see them free swimming, feed them Microworms for the first 4/5 days & then feed them Live Brine Shrimp.
