My angels spawned yesterday! They have a clutch of eggs and are busy chasing off the other fish as they come near, This is their second attempt at spawning -- the first time, they (or someone else in the tank) ate the eggs. This batch of eggs has lasted longer, so I'm thinking we might actually see some fry. My question is: when do the fry require baby brine shrimp? I want to know when to start a batch going.

Never mind .... The angels got into a big squabble elsewhere in the tank (locking jaws, etc.) and while they were doing that, the other fish had a nice snack of angelfish eggs. It doesn't look like any survived. It looks like the only way this would probably work (at least with this pair) would be to give the angels their own spawning tank.

Hi Doctor J
Angels sometimes take a long time to get spawning right.
If the eggs hatch to wigglers (about 3 days), then you have about 6-7 days before they are free swimming. You should prepare Brine Shrimp on day 5, as it takes about 16-30 hours for Brine Shrimp to hatch.
What you can do if you want babies to last, is wait till the angels hatch the eggs to wigglers, at this point you have no worries about fungus really, so you can easily snip the leaf the eggs are on, pop it in a tupperware container with an air stone, weight down with a rock, and wait till they are free swimming. Once they free swim you can remove the leaf and rock.
The babies would be fine in there until you notice fins really developing, and that they are cruisin around good - maybe a week or so. Then move them to a small tank, 5 or 10g , bare bottom with a sponge filter and I use a screen top and a small light for them. Feed 7-8 times a day to ensure rapid growth. Clean the tank every 2nd day or as required with tank water from the parents tank. After a couple of weeks, you can start doing water changes with tap water as per usual.
Good Luck, hope this helps!
My Angels only took their second batch out of 2 dozen to wigglers this week - they made it to 3 days away from free swimmers this time before they ate them.
Doing better but not quite yet. It is the dad angel that eats them.
Anyway, good luck Doc!

i raise my angel fry in seprate breeding tank. a ten gal 20watts 79 deg small peat disks, low hardness lots and lots of javamoss and sponge filters with a DIY dripper to constantly feed infusia to the fish then i raise then on microworms and BBS. but i raise the eggs to free swiming stage in a 2 gal with a sponge filter and methlyene blue to prevent fungus. remeber when transfering not to let the eggs touch air. they should be the size of a dime and eating flake at two months.

Most professional breeders raise the fry separately. I suggest you do the same. Even if you don't have the tank to spare, simly take a floating breeding net, place the egg laying surface inside with a small, weak airstone. The clutch should hatch in no time.

You must give them some time to get it right, or else move them to a seperate tank & let them breed there. It's better to move the eggs to another tank & raise them yourself.
Put an airstone where the eggs are, so you keep the water movement & you can use a sponge filter as filtration. After the eggs hatch & you see some tails moving you have about a week till they are free swimming & you can feed them Microworms for 3 days & then live Brine Shrimp. Feed them 4-6 times a day & do water changes every 2 days, so they will grow rapidly & healthy.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I don't really want to get into raising angels in a big way and not to the point that I'd set up a separate breeding tank. It would be kind of cool to see wrigglers and watch the whole angel parenting thing in action. It was only their second time and they did a little better this time. So, maybe next time we'll get a bit further. I'm saving all your hints and tips for the next time! Thanks, everyone!
