Well after being away for a few months due to an illness in the family I have finally returned and hope everyone has been doing well.
OK, Heres my problem a couple of months back I purchased a 48 gallon tank and my wife and I decided to get some angels. I made sure to use some gravel, water, and filter media along with about 6 giant danios from my 55 gallon to make sure the tank was fully cycled then returning them to the 55 gallon before introducing the angels. The tank is heavily planted, ph 6.5 ammonia, nitrites 0 temp. 80. On 3 different occassions I've bought angels from one of the national pet changes as well as a local realible fish store and no matter what I due I can not get them to live more than a couple of days. I simply can not figure out what I am doing wrong. Any help are advice would be greatly appreciated.

im not sure about this.. but how do you acclimate them? do you let em float for a while?

my first time with angels was about three months ago, i bought my first four.. i've never had a problem, but i've had people tell me they're very sensitive...

how long did you let the tank cycle before you added them?

sorry im not much help haha.. but im tryin!

Quick questions:

What was their size?

What did you feed them? Did they eat?

Did you notice any strange behaviour from the fish?

When you said pet changes, did you mean pet store chains?

Did you happen to observe their feces?

Sometimes, you might have ended up with a bad batch. Try looking for local hobbyists and breeders which might have fry to sell.

Cichlid Keeper, sorry to hear you've had such bad luck with them. I actually purchased one yesterday. Woke up this morning and its dead

I must admit that when I introduced it into the tank it didn't look too good.

Hope you have better luck with your next purchase.

Those who say they cant, Never will !!!

Hi there cichild keeper,

First off what is the nitrate in the tank? When they passed away what were the symptoms? How they look when they died? Further info can help. And one last thing, wild angels and domestic angels have different water requirements. Wild angels are alot more fussy abt water conditions than domestic ones. It could be several factors. It would be better if u can provide us with more info esspecailly how they look when they died.

Gee

!!I think I just learned somthing new!!

Can you please post the water parameters of the tank & answer the questions that "inkodinkomalinko" asked in a previous post?.

The angels were all somewhere around 3-4 inches in size. Yes,I was referring to one of the national pet store chains, but as I also said as well as a realiable local fish store. Never noticed any strange behavior they seemed to be doing fine and looked healthy. I would come home from work in the evening or even get up in the morning and find one dead and then a couple of days later the others would die.I fed them frozen brine shrimp as well as flakes and they all ate quite well. Never observed their feces. I also took well over 2 hours acclimated them to the water, slowly allowing water from the tank to drip into the bag.Water parameters: ph 6.5, ammonia and nitrite 0, nitrate 5ppm, temp 80.

Welcome back

Your parameters are good as is your acclimation time.
You're doing nothing wrong there except not quarantining your fish.

When you add fish, do you also add the water from the bag they came in ? (fishstore water)

Re what inkodinko said about the bad batch. This can't be true enough. All it takes is one sick fish to introduce something into your tank and it can linger in the tank affecting any fish introduced.

There's not near enough description on your fishes symptoms to diagnose what the illness is but it does seem pathogenic which is causing death to any fish introduced in a short amount of time. Probably a nasty bacteria.

In this case I'd pitch the gravel and filter media, thoroughly clean and sterilyze the filter internals and the tank with a diluted bleach/water solution, rinse well and use dechlor in the rinse water. Cycle again fishless, then add some danios for a month to test it out. Quarantining new fish for at least a month (some people go 2 months) would also be a good practice.

I 2nd finding private sources for fish. I haven't had a problem yet (lucky perhaps too) with fish bought from a fellow fishkeeper or home breeder. Anytime I add any from a chain fishstore I have nothing but problems and deaths in my tank. I did not quarantine either. Never again, I've learnt the hard way. Often fish will appear totally healthy at the store yet be a carrier of something into your tank you cannot possibly be aware of. Then it hits.

The best way to locate fellow fishkeepers is to find a reputable fish club. You'll make some friends that share the hobby as well as have a source of fish available to you. You can always ask your LFS if they know of one. Also can search online for them and local buy/sell sites as well. I hope that helps.
