Okay, my two Bolivian Rams are sticking together like they are best buddies. I can't tell the sexes yet, but is this a good indication that I lucked out and have a male and female? I mean, if they were same sex, would they be getting along so well?
I apologize in advance if this is a dumb question, but am new to cichlids.

They are probably just stressed from the move. how long ago did you get them.

I don't recall him saying anything about just moving the fish.

Yes this is a good indication you have a pair. Mine hate each other, and will fight at the sight of one another.

Yup, it sounds like you have a pair. Usually, Bolivian rams of the same sex don't hang out together like you have described. Is there any chance that you can get us some pictures, so that we can confirm if you do indeed have a pair?

I will try to get a pic of them....but for the life of me, they look just alike. EXCEPT. One is slightly bigger, and a little more reddish (pinkish, orangeish?) on the bottom area. And that coloring seems to come and go. Does that mean anything?

the size difference could be an indication. usually the smaller will be a female. this of course only works if they are both full grown.

I'm still confused on the sex of my rams they seem to hang out and not hangout just as much. Still to young to sex, although one is noticeably bigger and they were the same size when i got them a month ago or so.

mine do the same. this is more then likely because they are to young to be paired but are oppisit sex so arnt to agressive toward each other. bolivians dont pair till a yr old.

Well the bigger one does seem to kind of chase the other one with what looks to be playfull nipping. As their is no fin damage or anything i wonder if they are m/f. Only time will tell i guess.

I have pictures of my male and female Bolivian Rams that I can post if you need help in "sexing" your fish. It's not very difficult. The dorsal, anal and caudal fins have filamentous tips whereas the females are more rounded. Some females have a very slight filament to the caudal fin but usually they are rounded.

Yes they are easy to sex once they mature. I know no way to determine a juvi boliv's sex.

There are other signs of a fish's sex when at the juvenile stage, i.e. aggression, size, etc. However, to be absolutely sure, it's best for them to grow to maturity.
