It is a type of peacock cichlid. The males are very attractive fish, with the females being a drab brown. And they grow to about 5 inches.

HTH...

And as such, I have moved this to the cichlid forum so as to get seen by more people that care for these fish.

would not suugest that you put it in with any SA/CA cichlid. it is an african from lake malawai. also convicts are central american

Depends on the size of your tank. If it is 55 gal or larger I would say they will probably be OK. Other wise, I would not recomend trying it.

FYI, these fish are Lake Malawi Africans. Their scientific name is Aulonocara maleri

Allright, so I have a 55 gallon tank. Occupants would be:
2 Convicts
1 Bolivian Ram (possibly)
1 Angel
1 Blue Gourami
6 Cories
+ 1-2 Peacocks

Im ify on the Ram as the Convicts might get aggressive if they ever breed. I know ill definitely make more cover for the Cories. Otherwise would all those fish be compatible or should I trade in any of the above species at the LFS

I don't think SA/CA cichlids should ever be mixed with rift lake Africans. The water requirements are very different, as are temperaments and body languages.

Dakafall, I would have to say that you friends tank is overstocked, Having two Fronts in a 75g alone would be bad enough

I agree with just beginning that Africans and Americans should never be mixed.

I wouldn't keep the german red peacock with any thing over aggressive. The couple I had before we really passive as peacocks go.

Think of it like this:
African Fish and South American fish just dont speak the same language. Imagine being an speaker of an African Language, and having some Spanish speaking Fish come swimming over to you angry about something, and you have no idea what hes saying! What do you do?! This is exactly what happens. Fights break out, fish are injured, fish can die.
Not a good plan.

I catch what your saying, so basically they have different body temperments and communicate differently as far as fish go. I think ill leave out the peacocks. Ill probably get a seperate tank for the convicts also. thanks for the help!
