From the looks of the anacarus behind it, it appears adult size, but not sure, so thought I would ask. How long have you had it? Just wondering if you have had it long enough to settle in and if this is its full color pattern. Is it a single fish, or do you have more than one in the same tank? I too am leaning towards a female, but not because of the shorter pelvic fins, but the shorter anal and dorsal fins. Notice (at least in the pics they appear to be) how the dorsal and anal fins only reach or slightly extend over the caudal peduncle. In most males of the Apisto group, and especially in most sold in the trade, the males dorsal and anal fins extend way over the peduncle. And when they get to be large males, they many times even extend past the tip/end of the tail as well. There is always a bigger fish... |

I just went through the whole baensch cichlid atlas and thats as close as I can get. Are the yellow hues really that vibrant or is it a reaction of iridescence with the flash? Pretty sure its a female too. |

All my male Apistos have long, trailing pelvic fins that in most cases touch the anal fins and sometime extend all the way back to the caudal peduncle. Maybe my boy fish are weird. It really is a strong yellow I've had it for almost a year so I'd say it's adult-sized. That's the only one I have. I got it with some 'bonus' fish I was sent after a bad AquaBid experience. We're getting a cacatuoides male this weekend at our fish club so I wanted to make sure. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |
