I'm not sure this adds much, but I had a pair of kribs that spawned in a large planted tank with large clown loaches and siamese algae eaters plus large angels. The kribs had all fish in terror when they paraded the fry out. I netted out all but the 12 fry I could not catch and they raised those to sellable size (1.25 inch) with no troubles at all. Although apistos are a bit smaller, I would imagine they might fare about the same. I've been told that an apisto can stand down a full grown discus so... I think it could be possible, given enough covers (plants, small caves just large enough for the apistos and not the loaches). |

In any case, once a female will inhabit a cave as her territory, she will alter (or at least try to) the cave to suit her. It's quite amusing watching females moving gravel around. In any case, for the first few days of their lives the wigglers won't leave the cave and the mother will guard it fiercely from other fish. A fish that won't get the message might be killed, even if it's the father. The best thing, therefore, is to place the caves in the back corners of the tank where it is less likely for fish to pass by. Anyway, in my experience, other fish learn very quickly not to mess with the nasty creature which is the cacatuoides female. |

Once the fry are free swimming the angles will probably get them tho. I've found angles to be suprisingly good predators. A HEAP of java moss MAY enable a few to survive. A temporary glass divider for the first few weeks would be enough to get the fry big enough to survive the angles as they grow fasst and angles have small mouths ![]() Dean |
