ACIDRAIN Moderator Posts: 3162 Kudos: 1381 Votes: 416 Registered: 14-Jan-2002 | yep, as Catdancer has stated, there are a multitude of fish clubs in Ohio, and in very close range to all borders of Ohio. Ohio Cichlid Association, Columbus area fish enthusiasts, Greater Cincinnati Aquarium Society, There is one in Toledo, Pittsburg, Cleveland, Detroit, and Indianapolis. If any of these places are near you, let me know and I can get you some contact numbers. As the well the American Cichlid Association 2008 Convention is in July in Atlanta this year, and will be in Cincinnati in 2009, you might want to make plans for that one! There is always a bigger fish... |

ACIDRAIN Moderator Posts: 3162 Kudos: 1381 Votes: 416 Registered: 14-Jan-2002 | I have listed clubs I know about in the northern and north western Ohio Area, including pittsburg and Detroit areas; Ohio Cichlid Association http://www.ohiocichlid.com/ Check out their auction coming up Feb 2 this year. I would highly imagine they will have several types of shellies there. I can't remember going to any that did not have them. IMO, this would be your best bet. Columbus Area Fish Enthusiasts http://columbusfishclub.org/ Cleveland Aquarium Society http://www.clevelandaquariumsociety.org/ Greater Akron Aquarium Society http://www.gaas-fish.net/ Michigan Cichlid Association http://www.michigan.cichlid.freeservers.com/ Erie Aquarium Society http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ErieAquariumSociety/ Motor City Aquarium Society http://www.motorcityaquariumsociety.com/ Medina County Aquarium Society http://www.geocities.com/MCASfish/index.html Stark County Aqua-Life Enthusiasts Society http://scalesclub.com/page.asp?page=home Lorain County Aquarium Society http://www.geocities.com/lcas1998/index.html Youngstown Area Tropical Fish Society http://www.yatfs.com/ Greater Detroit Aquarium Society http://www.greaterdetroitaquariumsociety.com/ Greater Pittsburg Aquarium Society http://www.gpasi.org/index.html Great Lakes Cichlid Society http://www.greatlakescichlidsociety.net/ There is always a bigger fish... |

ACIDRAIN Moderator Posts: 3162 Kudos: 1381 Votes: 416 Registered: 14-Jan-2002 | I meant Apistos, sorry about that. Was bagging up some Lamprologus minutus (shellies) for shipment when writing that. But, all those are as good for Apistos as shellies as well as almost any other fish you might be looking for that you cannot find at your lfs. And I highly recomend you take time to go to the OCA auction next weekend. As you probably won't find a better selection of cichlids and Apistos in 500 miles, this time of year. And the prices at the auctions are usually better than you can get on-line or normal sales. If you can wait, the Cincinnait club auction is in April. And I can guarantee there will be Apistos and many other fish of all types there. We average over 1200 bags of fish at each of our bi-annual auctions. http://www.gcas.org/ As well, check our site regularly for some of our speakers we have each month. Though the lineup is not finished yet, it will be a great one! Just to give you an idea of the speakers we have brought in, check the past two years here; http://www.gcas.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7377 http://www.gcas.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4907 We do not charge anything for visiting fish enthusiasts to come to our speaker presentations. We only ask that you join if you come to more than 2 per year. And well... our memberships is still the lowest in the country at just $10 a year. There is always a bigger fish... |

ACIDRAIN Moderator Posts: 3162 Kudos: 1381 Votes: 416 Registered: 14-Jan-2002 | Unfortunately, I won't be making it to the OCA auction, as I have to work. But anytime you might be coming down to Cincinnait, just let me know. In 9 years as a member of our club, I have never missed a meeting or an event. There is always a bigger fish... |

catdancer Big Fish Mad Scientist Posts: 471 Kudos: 138 Votes: 13 Registered: 15-Apr-2007 | Just to let you know how worthwhile it is to attend auctions and swap meets: I got one nice young pair of A. hongsloi and two pairs of young A. viejita at my fishclub's auction last Sunday. Inexpensive and from a good breader as well. |

ACIDRAIN Moderator Posts: 3162 Kudos: 1381 Votes: 416 Registered: 14-Jan-2002 | My club has been around since the 1970s. And currently is one of the 3 largest (member count) local clubs in the US. Some years we are the largest, some years the second or thrid largest. But, my suggestion is for you to join the OCA (Ohio Cichlid Association) if you are into cichlids. As they are a great club, and closer to you. As well, you should join the ACA (American Cichlid Association). It is well worth the small membership fee to join any of the clubs out there. As you have a terrific link to getting some of the best quality, as well as some of the more rarer and hard to find fish. And the best part, you can usually get them much cheaper than at a lfs. The information obtained while in the club is much greater than you can get from the mags, or just word of mouth. As the clubs bring in those people that write the mag articles, to speak at your club meetings. Thus you can ask questions that pertain specifically to your needs. And, many times it is not always just about fish. We have had speakers at our club meetings, that have talked about tank building of all kinds, from acrylic to plywood, to concrete. We have had aquatic plant experts, cichlid experts, killifish experts, catfish experts, pleco experts, fish photography experts, saltwater experts, coral experts, lighting experts, and I could go on and on. All this and more, as you will meet many other people locally that have many tanks, or just a few, but have great knowledge in the realm of your local wants and needs. Currently I belong to about a dozen different clubs, national, state, and local. I always join the clubs I go and visit. After all, it is just a small nominal fee, usually between $10-$30 a year. and it helps support their club. There are many different clubs I go to, to see a specific speaker, or for their auctions. Once you get into a club, you will see others taking "road trips" to go and visit other clubs as well. Get with them, and take the trip! It is always worth the time, if nothing more than to make some new friends within the hobby. There is always a bigger fish... |

Mez Ultimate Fish Guru Asian Hardfeather Enthusiast Posts: 3300 Votes: 162 Registered: 23-Feb-2001 | have you actually tried asking your LFS who they deal with and if they get import them for you? Normally they are shipped from Asia or CZ...the ones here come from CZ. always send the wrong thing though..i hope you got your species right AcidRain when bagging |

ACIDRAIN Moderator Posts: 3162 Kudos: 1381 Votes: 416 Registered: 14-Jan-2002 | My Apisto connections are importers and wholesalers, and unfortunately, I cannot give out their info. Other than a few people, they do not deal with individuals. Besides, when dealing with them, you have to order bulk amounts of fish, and not just a couple or few. With Apistos, it usually ends up being like a minimum of 25 or so, if not more. However, they do go to the OCA auctions, as well as several other big events around the area. And they always sell at the ACA conventions as well. I cannot tell you what they are bringing to each event, as it comes down to what they have in stock at the time. At the conventions however, they do make special orders to take with them, depending on what/who the speakers are and their specific talks will be. As well they may take something that is a good seller at the time too. Mez, I hope I get the names correct, lol. Actually more important is getting the fish correct that I send, lol. There is always a bigger fish... |
