They're both CA cichlids, have similar temp & pH requirements.

Definitely not pairs, both will become agressive and territorial when breeding.

I've kept them together, one of each. The firemouth was twice the size of the convict. Most profiles will say firemouths are territorial but peaceful. I ended up with the odd firemouth who was extremely agressive and would pick fights with a cichlid at least twice his size. The con would kind of follow along and watch the action.

I don't know, IMO it's a bit risky. What size tank would this be and would there be other fish?

There is water at the bottom of the ocean

It's a 46gallon tank with a red tail shark ( I can not get rid of the shark it's my huband's) Now if I cannot get a convict what other cichlids could go with a firemouth????

in that size tank, i really dont think your gonna be able to add another cichlid, with a firemouth. I think your best bet is to use the firemouth as a centerpiece.

If you want an all cichlid tank, and want SA 's look at the more peaceful, smaller ones, such as apistos, rams, keyholes
