I have been doing lots of thinking and research and I have came to three species I would like to keep in my aquarium. It is my first time keeping Africans but yoyu have to start somewhere right? So would it be possible to keep Johanniis, Yellow Labs, and Red Zebras in a 65g tank or is this asking too much of the fish? If it is possible how many of each can I keep? Perhaps i would need to change the Johanniis for something else due to the similar colourings of the females?

I think that would be a good combination if you ask me. I would go with probley six of each and with lots of caves. With a larger number of africans it tends to reduce aggression.

You can try it, but as stated above, you need lots of caves & hiding places. I would leave the Johannii, as they're quite interesting fish.

No, No, No

DO NOT keep Johannii's with yellow labs.
Their far to aggressive and you'll end up with only those fish.
Melanochromis Species are best kept in a Species tank, and the Yellow labs are the last fish the should be kept with

I say go with the other two and maybe get some Acei, Socolofi, something that is not Johannii's
4 fish for each 3 species, should do you very well

Enjoy those Africans.

mmm interesting. I have some melanochromis Cyanohabdos (SP?) in my 115g with my electric yellows and they're fine. No aggression at all. Maybe they're not as aggresive because It's a large tank and there are plenty of rocks.

Afra's would be a good choice, And I say again Melanochromis species should be kept only with other Melanochromis species....

They'll be fine when their young and even as young adults but soner or later they will absolutely cause mayhem in you tank....
