"Is 'Blueberry Oscar' what he was called at the LFS? If so then he is almost certainly dyed - 'fruit' names are trade names for dyed fish. You hear of blueberry tetras, strawberry tetras, fruit tetras, fruit salad tetras - all dyed.

Very Very Good Point

Beastkeeper, blueberry and strawberry oscars are dyed. I honestly believe these are the fish referred to in the magazine picture that Tiger Angel posted. It specifically says in the caption in the lower-right hand corner that there is no shortage of FARMED varieties...including blue and pink oscars (blueberry and strawberry).

The fact that your oscar was dyed is what most likely lead to its death. I bought 2 blue oscars the first time I saw them (before I knew the truth about the dyeing process) and neither lived for more than a couple of weeks.

I'm sorry BeastKeeper
If it was dyed (which is what I think) then that is quite possibly what lead to his/her death. I don't think anyone can say for sure but if you had to guess then that would have to be where you'd be looking as to a reason

Take a look here...http://www.deathbydyeing.org/colormedead.htm

Where was that pic taken from Tiger Angel

The mag is called Practial Aquarium and is published by a well known hachette, and the fish is from National Sea Life Center Birmingham.

A picture similar to that was used in a TFH column within the last year, and if it was dyed, they certainly didn't know, which seems a little unlikely.

There is no lack of farmed varieties, albinos, spotted, (below), fantailed and pink or blue in color (above).

Where was that pic taken from Tiger Angel? I really think they're referring to the dyed blueberry and strawberry oscars that are available. It was the fact they brought up the 'pink' varieties as well that makes me think this.

I'd say it's fairly safe to say that any blue oscar you see in an lfs has been dyed

I would like to see this pic. I parouse several cichlid forum sites and that used to include 1 specialty oscar site and never have I come across info on a naturally occuring blue oscar. that's not to say it doesn't exist, but I really think more info would be available. I'd say it's fairly safe to say that any blue oscar you see in an lfs has been dyed.

A lot of the public aquariums do take large fish such as oscar from people whos tanks get to small for them, so if someone has been told they have a blue oscar from the lfs that is what they will tell who ever takes it! i personally havent heard of blue oscars so i'm going to look it up!

i called the lfs and that said they werent sure if it was dyed. but on the tank it said it was a blue oscar and was next to the rest of the regular oscars. when i got to the counter he rang up as a blueberry. he was a little more in cost. but if he gets to a nice and lives for a year he will be worth it. but from now on ill be more carefull!!!

I think it could well be a new colour morph and can only be found in the fantail variety. The reason i dont think its dyed is because i dont think the national sea life center birmingham support dyeing which i dont think they do and this is where the picture i have is from. if someone with premeium membership sends me their email i can send them the pic and they can post it

The dyed ones are cheapish or at least moderately priced - true blue oscars, if they exist (a lot of people think they do, including TFH, but that doesn't always mean it's true and I know someone will disagree with me if I say they do!), would surely be quite pricey.

so right its hard to tell if he is dyed or not. but as i understand he'll only die a prematured death but if he lives longer he is undyed.

right now he is a sky blue but i cant tell the difference.

what would he of cost if he was undyed?

if he was dyed how much would he cost?
