you must hatch baby brine shrimp, its your only option with angels. You can get the eggs at www.petfish.net it really easy. They also explain how to set up the hatchery.

You can get frozen baby brine shrimp at petsmart, they work in a pinch. Live baby brine shrimp are best though. There is a pretty good description of a hatchery on the breeding advice forum. (HATCHING BBS) I do mine a little different but whatever works. Don't try the fry food because most of your fry will die. I tried it with the my first batch and all but 7 died. With BBS I lose one or two once they are free swimming.

Good luck, Mike

My first batch of baby angels were fed with frozen food, specifically brine shrimp. If you have frozen BS (hehehe BS), you can rub it bewtween your fingers until you get a paste consistency and add that to the water. After some trial and error, I concluded that it was far too much of a hassle as it both fouled the water and cost $$, when you consider the fact that most of the stuff ends up going through the filter and never actually reaching the fry. Since then I've been using baby brine shrimp. I've heard finely mashed beef heart and flake will do the trick too, but again, the threat of water foulage has deterred me from going that route.

Frozen baby brine shrimp work fine but I only use it if I didn't time the shrimp hatches right. Make sure you get the baby brine shrimp, I've only found it in little packages, 1oz. I think. I keep some around because the important thing is having something to feed the fry.

I breed and sell angels to a number of LFS, and if you want to have a good outcome of fry them you have to go with BBS. I have tried just about every other food fry food possible, without a good outcome, maybe 20 fry at the most. Anyway if you want to have a large number of fry survive you will have to go with BBS. But if you simply just want to have a few live for your own pleasure frozen would be the way to go, but dont expect many to live.

One of the food that I have found works well is boiled egg youk. Your still not going to get a huge number of fry outcome, but alot better them frozen brine. Theres also is not alot of nutriton in the frozen brine shrimp. Klee mentioned that flake may work, no way. Thats the worse way to go becasue they really dont eat it, then it sits on the bottom of your tank polluting the water. No offence to you klee.Beefheart however does work pretty well, jsut as good as the youk, I just prefer the youk because its easy to get. Good luck

I also sell to local fish stores and frozen BABY brine shrimp work okay. I raised one batch from about 2 days after free swimming to 18 days. I had to go out of town and got the frozen BABY brine shrimp so my wife wouldn't have to mess with hatching shrimp. I didn't lose any, I asked. The fry were in a 5 gal. tank by themselves so dead ones would be noticed.
I still prefer live BBS but only because I think they it's more economical to hatch my own. If you think you're going to go into breeding and raising angels get a shrimp hatchery going and buy a bunch of tanks to grow the fry, Stores won't want them until they get about the size of a quarter, 150 quarter size fish take up alot of space. If you only want to raise a batch now and then, go with the frozen if you don't want the hassle.
Have fun, good luck
Mike

Incidentally, I did try some baby flake last night--and it worked quite well. If you're at all worried about flake not being eaten, I suggest you get a BN or two, or maybe a bamboo shrimp (I always keep BNs with fry). Not only will they not touch the fry, they'll also clean up uneaten foods/corpses. Prepared beef heart (or so I recently learned) is kind of screwed up with respect to hormones and chemical levels, so go with BBS/flake.

What's a BN? Did the baby flake work on older fry or fry that just became free swimming?
Thanks Mike

BN=Bristle Nosed Plec. Also, a looked into it a bit, and apparently, sometimes, the fry don't accept prepared flake. Try it out first. BBS is still your best bet.
