I've got a new 20 gallon long tank that I've had for about 9 months now that is just sitting around gathering dust, and recently I've been trying to decide what to stock it with.

Shellie's have come to mind and I was curious in your opinions what would be the best species or multiple species to use in this set up?

Cant really sit here and say "this is the best" because honestly that tank would be great for all of them i believe. its really what you want out of the fish that would be the deciding factor. color? colony? antics? numbers? there are so many different aspects to look at.

what i personally would do with a 20g....Multis. i have a 10g of them now and will be relocating them into a 30g breeder tank (more floor space, lots).

Are there any species that can be housed together or is it best to set up the tanks as a specific species tank only

If you want to have a lot of fish in one tank go with either multies or similis, who will create and live in a colony-type setup.

Multies were my first shellies. Most people don't see shellies as bright, colorful fish but multies for example have the absolutely gorgeous blue eyes.

Setting up a tank is quite easy for them. They really don't like a lot of substrate...if they feel there's too much they move it out of their way, which can be a problem with filter intakes. I personally recommend a very small layer of crushed coral, just to assist with buffering and to give a natural look to the tank. They'll still move it around...it's really funny and surprising to see these big piles they put together.

Lots and lots and lots of shells...my multies are in a 10g and there are at least 50 whale eye shells. Again like substrate the shells will get moved, but for them that's just housekeeping

I purchased 8 adults for my tank so you could adjust stock accordingly...or you could offer me the 20g

Very much the shellie addict here...let me know if you have any other questions

Theresa,

If you were closer to where I live I might just offer you the tank, but I don't think it would be very cost effective to get it from Idaho to Maryland

Along with the shellie's, are there any type of other fish that you feel would be compatible in this size of tank. I know that there are some smaller rock dwellers that can sometimes be kept with shellies, but not certain if any would workout in this size of tank
