How can you tell if one black belt if its either a male or female?

From what I understand, most Vieja and Paratheraps (formerly Vieja) species are very difficult to sex. The best way to determine the gender would be to vent a 5-7" specimen or to watch them either lay or fertilize eggs.

I had a pair not too long ago, the males develop red coloring on their belly, almost like a firemouth, and some red coloring on its back side. Other than that, the male will grow a lot faster than the female.
