so i want to set up a 55 gallon aquarium for to electric blue jack dempseys. the plan is to buy them young and hopfully breed them. i have done a lil research that was help ful on the breeding process. really weird but anyone have experience with these guys?

They seem to be a bit on the expensive side, gorgeous, less agressive than regular JDs, and I believe they can be e to eye problems. I haven't read anything about breeding them but I'd assume that like other cichlids they'd be protective...

There is someone on another board I go on that has been able to breed them. It is no easy task. Requires a lot of tank space, a lot of time and a lot of patience.

First step is getting a good strong male BJD. Once grown to maturity (not and easy task on it's own since most seem to be fairly fragile) you introduce a regular female JD. Hopefully you get a pair and have a successful spawn.

You then have babies that look like regular JD's but they carry the Blue gene. Grow the babies to maturity and breed a female with the blue gene back to your blue male or ideally another blue male that isn't it's father.

The other guy said it took him a year and half to complete this process and now has had his second successful spawn.
