I bought a blue ram about 3-4 weeks ago. Since I have got him home it has lost its bright yellow color and its strip across its eye. Also its eye does not have the red tint as it did earlier.
When I put in tank, I had a divider in it to have tankmates become used to it.
Divider is out and it is not stressed by others, they all get along great.
tank is 55 gl.
tank mates are jack dempsey, gold gourami, green severum.
chemistry is under control, 2 days ago nitrates were 20 ppm.

Looks sometimes depend on what its being fed, so what are you feeding it? Also are ya sure they are getting along? The reason i ask is because i would be thinking that the jack demsey would be a problem for the ram.

No doubt about it, none of the fish in your tank belong in there with that Jack Dempsey. He must still be a little guy, and that would explain why he hasnt ripped apart your other fish yet.
The Blue Ram is probably terrified in the tank of Dempsey, just like any young boxer was when they got in the ring with that fish's namesake.

Stress cannot be a factor. I had a firemouth in as well until it had some seizure of some sort and died 2 days later.
Actually the gold gourami was the only one to bother it at first and that was when I placed a divider in tank for 2 weeks. Fish was in divider almost right away.
I often sit and watch my aquarium(its better than television, right?) None of the fish bother it, in fact the jack dempsey is probably my most serene fish in tank. It 7-8 inches long and at most 4 years old. And when it sees me it starts doing loops in tank.
I have never a agressive fish. Call me the fish whisperer!
I fed the blue ram cichlid flakes, crumbled cichlid pellets, crumbled jumbomin food sticks. I also fed jack dempsey krill and bloodworms. Sometimes ram will get remenants of them.

Don't leave those fish together, as they have different aggression & territorial factors.

The Ram don't belong to that tank & surly the colours gone pale, because he's terrified.

I thought it may be sick.
As I had said NO fish ever bothers it. I have places it could hide, it never does. If it did then I would think ya'll are right, in this case, stress is not the problem! My jack dempsey is never a trouble maker. In fact ram is comfortable swimming along with any of fish in tank.

Either it's sick or it's terrified, either way it sounds like you need to remove the ram from that tank before you lose it.

i agree with the above posts. there is another issue also. the nitrates are to high. blue rams are very sensitive fish to bad water quality.

nitrates is what I figured. I have been adding plants along with water changes.
Thanks All!
