I just bought 2 blue head apistos, talking to another lfs mate (different store than i bought them from) he thinks there's still some contention over species name... anyone got any info on these guys? Tips on picking males from females? Thanks in advance...

Got any pics or a scientific name? Most apisto females are very plain compared with the males. Males are much more colorful and their fins are longer.

Agasizzi
Bitaenita
Borelli
All 3 of these have some blue on their head. The Borelli is mostly blue.

"Blue Head Apisto" is the common name that they're selling them under at the lfs, but it doesn't look like either the Agasizzi or the Borelli. Havn't seen a Bitaenita... Looks kinda like this one http://www.apistogramma.com/cms/apistogramma_valid_taxa/apistogramma_velifera/a._velifera/

blue head apistos are a species of apisto..not a common name for a borelli or agasizzi, ect
my LFS got a shipment of these guys in last week, they are quite nice and i would of got a pair if i didn't buy some flag cichlids lol. i don't no their scientific name but the ones my LFS have a really blue head, not dull like in those photos. do your ones have a much brighter blue head than the ones in the photos?

Yep, beautiful blue heads. I think I have two males though...I just wanted to know whether the females would have similar colouration etc to the males and only vary in something like dorsal fin length or be a different colour entirely like in other apistos...
