The best way to get a pair (like many other cichlids) is to get 8 juveniles and grow them together until you get a pair forming. Now i don't know how big oscars have to be before they can breed, but i'm geussing it's a pretty decent size and you'll need a serious tank to hold 8 oscars. |

Whenever I try to establish a pair, I usually stick with 4-5 to find a pair instead of 6-8 as usually reccomended. Usually picking 2 of the largest fish and 3 of the smaller/medium fish would give you a pair, or two. Now theres some discussion about how they two fish might not pair off, but almost always two fish, except for certain species, would pair off when conditions are right. If you interested in breeding oscars, I'd reccomend a 100 gallon. Pick 4-5 oscars and grow them up together. Sooner or later you'd see two digging a giant hole or hogging up a nice piece of slate or rate and flaring and attacking the others. Get rid of the others, and there you go. Triggering oscars to spawn shouldnt be hard. The first step is to increase the temperature. Usually the higher 70's and lower 80's work well. Second, feed more. Krill, beef hearts, etc. Third is water changes, almost every fish perfers cleaner water when they're spawning. Fourth, a spot to spawn. Usually a pot saucer or piece of slate as long as the male would work, though if they're well conditioned they might just dig up a giant hole and spawn on the bottom glass. Oscars GT, most fish usually have infertile first spawns. See if the next spawn is infertile. If it is, I would vent them to be sure they're a pair. |
