Why are you returning them?

I thought petsmart would only accept dead fish for returns?

that is alot of cichlid for a given tank, what is the size.

also if u are looking for breeding fish, i would just get 5 more 75 gallon tanks and hold the pairs in their so that u can breed them, i really don't like when people buy the fish just to return them, but that is my problem.

ok let me explain for bratty just so everyone is up to date from previous posts. bratty isnt breeding. she wanted a pair of fish in her tank that were "wet pets" and got 2 oscars. well the tank size is to small for oscars so a bunch of suggestions were made and she decided on the JDs. nice size and still had the wet pet personality. So the idea isnt to get a pair to breed persay she just wants a happy couple that wont kill each other.

Bratty i dont knwo what to tell ya with the time frame limited by your shop. cant force pairs to form and cant give them a time limit. they have to a perticuler age and maturity. dont worry thought it can happen over night without warning or signs just keep watching them.

a tip about shyness. feed them a bunch of time during the day in small amounts. couple pre soaked pellets perfish like 3-4 times a day will quickly associate YOU as the food god lol. shyness will give way to this qickly.

i remember the post, but not the tank size. an i agree with the post above, pairing can't be forced on young fish, also 1 would be ebst.

Ok.. so i've decided that what I will be doing is keeping them until a pair forms. THen my only choice is to bring them to another LFS who take freshwater fish...

and thank you sin in style for explaining my situations.. hehe.. I've been trying hard to be good with my fish keeping habits.. and i was reading the posts tonight explaining the situation in my head haha..

my tank is a 60 gal 12x24x48... someone was asking for that...

so that's what i'll do.... and no Petsmart told me they'll either take the fish back in two weeks, dead or alive (sounds like a wanted poster haha)

thanks for the input. I just wanted someone to say "no, you have to wait until they pick each other" lol.. I'm stubborn that way!

thanx again!!!

J/W but isn't breeding the intention here, i was just wondering as i stated this, and i was told u wanted just a pair to be buddies in a tank which would probably be a male and female if u say "pair up"

ok i was just wondering as i had some questions in my head that i was thinking about this topic.

well I was told by everyone on here that at a mature age the only two that i will be able to keep in a tank that size is a female and a male paired up. If they do I can put the fry in a 20 gal until they get a little bigger and if i don't get a bigger tank i can bring them to the LFS..

one fish is lonely, and i was advised that it would be better to have two!

hi all..

i don't want to sound like a broken record, but my Jack Dempsey's are starting to worry me. I've had them for over a week.....and they still hide the second they see movement in my room. They hide a little less..... they won't stay hidden as long now if I don't move and sit there... but I won't be able to see them pair up lol..

and also, I have until this Sunday to bring the other 4 back for a refund at Petsmart. Now I'm pretty sure they won't pair up in that time, so I'm debating wether or not I should just pick the one i like the most and return the other 5, or keep them all until they successfully pair up and basically give the other 4 to a LFS that will take freshwater fish off of people's hands..

i don't even know about 2 jd's in a 60g, i have a 5" oscar, 4" gt and a 4" geophagus in my 125g and it seems cramped to me. there is probably no real problem with your limit but i wonder if the male would start to beat up on the female if there are not enough hiding places or space to run away from. not critisizing just thinking out loud

Hi Bratty,
is pet smart the only fish store near you?
If it isnt, I would just keep all the JD's till
you end up with a pair.
Then take the others to a LFS (not a big chain a small store), and they will give you store credit/or exchange
for plants/merchandise/what have you.

Or, wait till they pair - then advertise them in your local Buy Sell and Trade - its free to addy, and you will find prospective buyers very easily that way.
Its the way I used to sell all my guppies and platys.

Makes for repeat customers too espescially if you end up breeding the JD's successfully.
Also - on a side note, I was in my fave LFS just about 1 week ago today, and a fellow that supplies them with young JD's brought in a new clutch of about 14 babies about 1-2 inches long, and was paid 75$ for the bunch cash.
Not a bad profit if you ask me. Thats a little over 5 bucks each.

Way to go bratty!
So cute!!
Your JD's look very colorful too!
Nice tank by the way.

Suggestion on photo taking :
flash off, tank lights on, room lights off.
Set camera to macro mode- designated usually by
a tulip symbol or rose bud.
Try that, it should help.

Congratulations on being a first time JD Grandma!!!

Hehe thank you so much...

problem is when i use the tulip mode, my shots don't come out clear bc i don't have a tripod.. I tried improvising but it didn't work out so well... bc the shots come out so dark when there are no lights. I tried using the sports mode...that way the shutter speed is higher and if the fish move i still get a clear shot. I'll have to get more light into the aquarium....maybe with a lamp shining from the side??

and again...thank you! I love that of the 6 JD's i purchased.... two were dark.....and i said to myself i hope they're female and male and mate..and they did haha
