Recently Calvus caught my eye. I realized that some had a (starting from eye) |, V, V, |, V, )(, |, - stripe pattern.

Others have all | stripes except one V near the gills, sometimes none.

Found this interesting, most of the ones that display the V stripes are often females also, and the ones with all | stripes are males.

If your lost, heres some pics of V stripes

Heres one which shows all | stripes

Perhaps this is shows the sex of the fish?

i'm afraid it is more likely that the 'v' markings are a result of the stripes being badly formed, from poor breeding lines.. the nearest i have seen to do with markings and sexing is on the back corner of the dorsal tip both the shape of the fin, and the pattern which lines it, seems to be a point on the male and curved on the female.

There's very little - no sexual dimorphism in A.calvus or A compressiceps.
Patterns definately have nothing to do with the sex of the fish, and like Malaikah said, are most likely from bad breeding.
What you've noticed is just a coincidence.

Oh thanks for the answer.

I never realized it was bad breeding, most of the good looking ones have that striping at my LFS.

Thanks guys!
